What is a Clinical Psychologist?

A Clinical Psychologist is a health care professional who is licensed and regulated by the state to evaluate, diagnose and treat persons with mental and emotional disorders.  Clinical Psychologists use methods based upon psychological theory and research to help adults, children, couples, families, and groups decrease stressors and conflicts and increase personal growth and satisfaction.

What Kind of Education is Required to be a Clinical Psychologist?

After four years of college education, a Clinical Psychologist attends graduate/professional school for an average of five or more years.  During this time he or she studies the science of human behavior with special emphasis on theory, research and practical applications of numerous diagnostic and treatment methods.  Two years of supervised experience in a hospital or other healthcare setting is required to become a Clinical Psychologist, one year of which is post-doctoral.
